detail shotsAre you clean?

I started drawing and painting at a young age. When the kids in the neighborhood were outside playing I always preferred being inside, usually drawing. As I grew up I focused on Art in school, with the nagging “you should try something else, you don’t want to be a starving artist” playing in the back of my head. I ignored all that and majored in Art in College, getting my BFA from VCU and my MFA from Rutgers University, and then I starved lol. I took a corporate job to live, yet was crushed inside. I still painted in my free time, had a few galleries and shows, sold a lot of paintings, but was never really who I felt like I was inside. I was a Producer for Sony, producing commercials and Documentaries. There were certainly fun parts of the job, but creativity by committee was soul crushing. I left Sony and rekindled my love for creating Art, so back to the starving Artist routine lol, but have never been happier inside, and look at all the weight I’ve lost.

To understand the scale of these paintings

In school I did large scale acrylics of men in pools. The pool at that time represented the pool of humanity for me. Fluids were the fluids we all share, namely water. The work was about inclusion. The pool of humanity. The current series, “Are you clean”, focuses on a smaller pool, the gay community, but addresses the larger pool of humanity still. I struggle with telling you too much about the inspiration of these paintings. We all look at Art and derive our own meanings, but this at least helps you understand my jumping off point. The hope is always that the paintings go on and have their own lives, their own meaning.
